My countdown to the 44th Daejong Awards continues with the Best Director nominations:
Bong Joon Ho – The Host
(Director Bong was a winner in 2003 for Memories of Murder and his screen credits are for both writer and director. The Host is his third full length feature film. He needs no introduction as his biodata is easily available. His other feature film is Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000) and his short films are Baeksaekin (1993), Memory Within the Frame (1994), Incoherence (1994), Influenza (2004) and Sink and Rise (2004)

Kim Tae Yong – The Birth of a Family/Family Ties
(Director Kim won the 2006 Golden Alexander award in the Thessaloniki (Greek) International Film Festival for this film. He was nominated for 3 award for his 1999 film Memento Mori: Remember the Dead aka Whispering Corridors 2 (Hangul: Yeogo goedam II) in Slamdance Film Fest (USA), Paris Film Festival (France) and Fantasporto (Portugal). He seemed to be favored in Europe and particularly in Spain with so many reviews of his movies in Spanish!
Kim Yong Hwa – 200 Pounds Beauty
(Director Kim is also the writer for the above movie. Previous effort was also a comedy, Oh! Brothers)

Ryu Seung Wan – City of Violence
(Director Ryu is an actor and director who is part of a group of new wave Korean directors (including Park Chan Wook, Lee Chang Dong and Kim Ki Duk). Acclaimed to be the golden boy of Chungmuro, his directional credits include Die Bad (2000), No Blood No Tears (2002), Arahan (2004), Crying Fist (2005). He acts in his own films, i.e. Die Bad and City of Violence and those of others in the new wave group, i.e. Park Chan Wook´s Sympathy for Mr Vengeance (2002) and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005) and Lee Chang Dong´s Oasis (2002). Most of his films have his younger brother Seung Beum, the Best Actor in 2007´s Paksaeng Awards but not City of Violence which Director Ryu himself has a major role.

I think sadly … Kim Yong Hwa – 200 Pounds Beauty will be the winner! but i personally don’t think the movie deserved this much attention .. it was not all that!
