CJ Media has opened today, April 22, its own brand page called “Mnet” in the largest video site, Youtube. Contents from other affiliates of CJ Media like tvN, Channel CGV, Xports, XTM, O’Live, CJ Entertainment (Movies), Mnet Media (Mnet, KM) are also to be uploaded soon. As this page is targeted for overseas viewers, video contents uploaded in the 5 video categories (Celebrity News, Drama/Series, Movies, Music and Variety/Reality) have English subtitles. CJ Media also plans to upload 200 or more videos in a year in its brand page.

I already visited the site…they have a very nice banner and it’s very organized into categories. But they need major revamping. They have poor quality videos, but that’s usually true for Mnet and I’m suspecting it’s because they don’t use HD (which I’m not sure of, but Mnet videos uploaded by other users also are blurry compared to videos from SBS, KBS). Nonetheless, I’m impressed that they are going to be putting English subs, which definitely opens up a broader audience. However, in order for this site to become a major source for Korean entertainment, they need to put up recent, up-to-date videos. I mean, who wants to see videos from 2004?! Other Youtube users have already uploaded these videos and fans have already seen them. They need to show us something NEW!!! Despite its lack-luster beginning, I think it’s a very good, smart idea by CJ and Mnet to use the internet as a vehicle for the next Hallyu Wave.
The launch of this site also brings up another issue. This was brought up by coolsmurf that any videos from CJ Media can no longer be uploaded by other Youtube users. This might be the case or it might not, but it’s definitely a major concern for video uploaders who fear their site will get suspended for unreasonable violation of “copyrights”. (Since when did Korean media have copyrights?) In any case, I hope CJ Ent. realizes that it is the passion, time and effort of fan subbers and uploaders that are driving the popularity of Korean entertainment. To start slapping on copyrights and hunting down users will be a great insult to uploaders and an even greater detriment to their efforts of selling their media.
