Up until this point in time, it appears to me this “joint marketing” between Se7en and Amerie still tips the scale to the advantage of Amerie. I have yet to see this partnership rubbing off for Se7en in America, correct me if I am wrong! Perhaps we will know next month.

At a glance, Amerie who seemed to look like a Filipino but is a Black and Korean mix has returned to her homeland to her Korean compatriots.

Apart from often showing off her waist and large tattoo in the Korean words, earlier for her new album, Because I love It, she relied heavily on Se7en for the recording of Take Control, taking on the other singer´s popularity in Korea to her advantage.

Was the initial reaction successful? In May, Amerie performed two shows in Seoul´s AX Hall, each show had an audience of 2,000. The response was explosive.

Apart from returning to Korea for her singing career, hosting and drama were not difficult for Amerie. In 2004, she did BET station´s music program, The Station, thereafter in her movie, First Daughter, playing the role of a good friend to the wife of Tom Cruise, i.e. Katie Holmes who played the protangonist. Although the box office taking was only RM31.05 million (approx. Its not every day that you find yourself discussing C S Lewis with an R&B diva; but then, Amerie is no ordinary member of that rarefied species.
“I remember telling all my friends about Narnia when I was seven years old.”she recalls avidly.

“Oh, I love books, I always have. I even love the smell of them. I always carry a couple in my bag.”
It’s hard to imagine Beyonce producing a well-thumbed copy of, say, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland from her Hermes Birkin bag, but her love of literature is not the only thing that marks out Amerie – who also has a degree in English and fine arts from Georgetown University in Washington – from her peers.
Her looks are sexy, yet sultry, the result of her African-American/Korean parentage. She chats unselfconsciously, punctuating her conversation with an uninhibited laugh rather than the standard-issue diva’s icy formality.
And, with the release of her third album, Because I Love It, she has moved beyond the influence of early mentors – such as Crazy in Love creator Rich Harrison, who crafted her earlier hits, including Why Don’t We Fall in Love and 1 Thing – to write and produce much of her own material.
The first fruit of her labours, the single Take Control, is a maddeningly infectious soul-hip-hop hybrid on which Amerie implores her paramour to assist her in exercising constraint, while a chattering guitar line and slapping snare drum encourage just the opposite approach.
It’s the perfect introduction to Amerie’s skittish persona: girlish but fierce, seductive but sweet. “I am all those things,” she nods, “and I think we’ve nailed them on this album.”
Many of the tracks on Because I Love It betray an 80s influence; “Crush” boasts a candles-aloft chorus that wouldn’t have shamed Duran Duran in their pomp, and Some Like It samples former Sex Pistols manager and early champion of hip-hop Malcolm McLaren.
“I wanted to put a lot of 80s stuff on the last album,” says Amerie, “but I was worried about whether the audience would want to go there with me. I thought it might be too left-field, too much to digest. But this time I think we’re all ready for it.”
Hang on, though; Amerie, now 29, was born in January 1978, which means that she was a mere stripling through most of the decade she claims to revere.
“But all the music was being played around our house,” she stresses. “My mother was a pianist and my parents loved all kinds of music, so we’d have the Grease soundtrack, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, the Beastie Boys, heavy metal. I think it all went in subliminally.” And, she adds, “it’s taken a while for all these influences to percolate into her own music.”
“My first album, All I Have, was very mellow R&B,” she says, ‘”as that was my vibe back then. People would meet me and say, ‘My, you’re a dynamo but your album is so laid-back.’” She laughs. “Well, now they’re getting the pure, unexpurgated me.”
Is the fact that this is the first album she’s done without Rich Harrison’s guidance as big a deal to Amerie as it seems to be to others?
“Not at all,” she says breezily. “We could be back together again with the next album. I just wanted this record to feel funkier and looser. But whatever groove I’m in, melody will always be important to me,” she adds, with a toss of her long, ink-black hair.
“I love songs you can sing along to with a hairbrush, just like I did as a kid. You know,” she continues, grinning, “I called the album Because I Love It because that’s what I always say to people when they ask me why I got into this business. I love the whole process of writing, recording, videos, performance, everything.” She pauses; the smile is now getting positively beatific. “I just know I’m in the right place, doing the right thing.”
Amerie’s ambition showed itself early. “As a kid, I wanted to do everything,” she recalls.
“I’d say to my mom that I wanted to be a detective, astronaut, singer, teacher, and Egyptologist when I grow up. She’d roll her eyes and say, ‘Yes, darling.’” Amerie’s father was a soldier in the US army and met her mother when he was stationed in Korea.
As ‘army brats’, Amerie – full name Amerie Marie Mi Rogers – and her sister Angela, two years her junior, moved wherever their father was stationed, including Arizona, Alaska, and the then-West Germany; she vividly remembers a trip through Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin when she was a little girl.
She insists that she was inspired rather than disturbed by her parents’ itinerant life: “I enjoyed all the moving around and starting again,” she says.
“It enlarged my experience. I’ve never had a problem making new friends, and the legacy of it is that I’m able to adapt very quickly to different situations.”
Likewise, she maintains that her singular lineage presented her with no special difficulties.
“I was never made to feel that I was ‘different’ by other kids,” she says. “I mean, in army camps you get all sorts of mixed-race kids – African-American/German, Japanese/American. So really I was the norm rather than the exception. But people would still ask me, if you had to choose one ethnicity, which would it be? I’d be, like, why do I have to come down on one side or the other? I get that people love to categorise, but I think we get a little too hung up on it sometimes.”
(For the record, she feels ‘very Korean’, speaks the language fluently, and cooks Korean at home; she’s also pretty big in Korea itself, where ‘they seem to have really embraced me, which is great.’)
As a child, Amerie needed little inducement to perform for family and friends – ‘I used to put on endless shows, and they’d be pleading with me to get my face out of the camera,’ she recalls cheerily – but, as she got older, ‘I got a lot shyer about that kind of stuff, whereas my sister became much more outgoing.
She became the popular girl at school with the clique of girlfriends who went off to the mall, and I’d spend all my time in my room reading my books and studying my atlas. My parents thought my sister would be an actress or singer and I’d be a lawyer.’
In fact, the opposite turned out to be the case. Amerie, who studied dance and started entering and winning talent shows from the third grade, decided she’d give the entertainment world a shot after she’d finished her degree, while Angela decided to become an entertainment lawyer; she now looks after her sister’s legal affairs. ‘It was a 180-degree turn, and my mom always laughs about that,’ says Amerie. ‘She says, you think you have your children all figured out, but you never know what’s going to happen.’ The sisters remain very close, and share an apartment in New York.
‘In some ways, our personalities have remained the same,’ says Amerie. ‘She still loves going out to parties and dinners and I’ll always prefer staying in and cooking.
She’s like, “Celebrity is wasted on you! Think of all the parties you could be going to right now!”‘
Angela also plays a leading role in crafting Amerie’s image. ‘She picks out my clothes for performances and photo shoots and I totally trust her, because she has such a brilliant eye,’ she says reverently.
‘I know exactly what I want to look like, but I tend to overload on the accessories or put weird colour combinations together if I’m left unchaperoned.’
Amerie’s demeanour is another area where she differs markedly from the diva norm. While many of her R&B contemporaries are happy to bump-and-grind their way through videos that seem to be equal parts soft-porn fantasy and ever-more-creative showcases for the applications of baby oil, Amerie’s strict Baptist family background informs the way she presents and conducts herself.
It can sometimes make her sound like the Good Girl – ‘I like the occasional glass of chardonnay with a fish supper,’ she says, while struggling to pinpoint any incipient vices – but it’s actually a little more complicated than that.
‘I’m not puritanical,’ she stresses. She would describe herself as spiritual rather than religious.
And then there’s the matter of her legs. ‘Oh, I’m very proud of them and I love to show them off,’ she purrs.
‘I’m always picking up skirts and thinking shorter, shorter shorter. But I don’t like anything hanging out,’ she says in horror.
‘I don’t feel I need to exhibit myself like a piece of meat. I want to be sexy but in a Betty Grable 50s-pin-up rather than a raunchy centrefold kind of way.
I wouldn’t allow myself to be exploited in that way by anyone,’ she says firmly. ‘I’ve got very strong ideas about the way I want to look and act.
That’s why my parents didn’t worry about sex, drugs and rock’n'roll when I got into this business,’ she concludes forcefully. ‘They know that’s not my personality.’
That winning personality – flirty, old-school glamour with a modern, urban sheen – is gaining Amerie attention beyond the concert hall and dance floor.
She played Katie Holmes’s roommate in a movie drama called First Daughter in 2004 (and praised Katie at the pre-Tom Cruise time as ’someone of strong morals and a strong faith, not a crazy girl’ – remind you of anyone?), and has a couple of other acting projects in the ‘very early stages’.
Her record company is already describing Amerie as ‘the female superstar of 2007′, but she’s too smart to be swept up in such hyperbole.
‘Hmm,’ she demurs, when I mention the s-word. ‘I think I’d like to find a balance, because reality is really important to me.
I’d hate not to be able to sit in a coffee shop and watch the world go by. What do you write about if you’re sealed off from all that?’
In a similar vein, she likes to keep her private life private. She was happy to confirm around the time of her last album that she wasn’t dating rap impresario Damon Dash, contrary to rumour, while neglecting to enlighten the world as to whom, if anyone, she was dating in his stead.
And this time round? ‘I’m not dating anyone that you would know about,’ she says with a wry smile.
‘I don’t want to subject any relationship to that kind of scrutiny. If I’m outed with someone in a magazine then I’ll hold my hand up, that’s fine.
But I’m not going to start spilling every detail of my private life to the press. That’s counterproductive, I think.’
With her exemplary good sense, Amerie is in danger of becoming some kind of role model. Who, I wonder as a parting shot, does she herself look up to? ‘Oprah Winfrey, definitely,’ she says instantly.
‘She’s so positive, open and intelligent and she handles herself with such aplomb and grace. And,’ she says in tones approaching awe, ’she has a book club.’
To a literature-loving diva, that’s the ultimate form of approbation.

Amerie Mi Marie Rogers, the 27-year-old Korean-American rhythm and blues singer, songwriter, and producer was shocked to discover South Korean girls wear “skimpy” clothes, because she thought they’d be more conservative than Western women.

The Take Control singer – who is half Korean herself – was stunned to see local women exposing so much flesh when she first visited the country, and was even more surprised to see girls dancing half-naked in music videos.

She says, “It totally shocked me the last time I was out there actually – I thought everyone would be so conservative, and then I see these Korean videos and I can’t believe my eyes.”There’s all this flesh flying about. And then you walk around Seoul and all the girls are wearing the shortest skirts in the world. You just wouldn’t believe how skimpy they are.”

Now she is starting to collaborate with Korean artists, this time working with Se7en (pronounced Seven), the Korean pop idol who sang “Come Back to Me” and “Crazy.”

be performing “Take Control” at cable channel’s Mnet’s music program “M
Countdown” and on the 25th, Amerie will be recording for KMTV’s program. She

American R&B diva Amerie expressed her special feeling for her mother’s home country during a press conference at a Seoul hotel on Wednesday to promote her third album “Because I Love It.”

Amerie, who is of Korean descent, showed up wearing a pastel-hued stylized hanbok (Korean traditional costume) at the conference. She appeared together with her mother, Mi-suk Rogers, who also wore a traditional pink hanbok.

“I didn’t know what to expect since it has been a few years since I’ve been here but I’m excited to be here with my family. I’m very honored to be here,” Amerie said. Amerie was born to an African-American father who was a military serviceman, and a Korean mother.

Although she has been to Seoul several times, this was Amerie’s first visit since her music career skyrocketed with the hit songs “1 Thing” and “Touch” which were nominated for best song awards in the 48th Grammy Awards.

Unlike the difficult experience of football star Hines Ward growing up as half-Korean, half African-American in the United States, Amerie said she did not have any bad experiences.

“I definitely feel the world is becoming more multi-cultural. I didn’t encounter too many difficulties growing up. Of course, there was teasing occasionally, but I didn’t attribute that to being biracial. They were just teasing because I was different, and its part of the normal process of growing up. It made me a lot stronger and made me who I am,” she said.

Amerie admitted she could only speak a few words of Korean. “It (Korean) was my first language but my mother was worried because teachers were telling her I would never learn English if she didn’t talk to me in English at home. So we didn’t speak in Korean. Interestingly I can read and write fluently,” she said.

For her third album, Amerie wrote, arranged and produced all of the songs. “I put my heart and soul into it. It has a lot of different elements to it, ’80s New Wave, ’70s funk, go-go soul, R&B and hip-hop,” she said.

The 27-year-old also collaborated with K-pop singer Se7en on the remix version of “Take Control.” “Se7en is very talented as an artist and performer. I was very excited to collaborate with a Korean artist. It was very easygoing. He danced a lot while he was recording, which was cute,” she said.

Amerie expressed disappointment at the cancellation of her concert in Seoul, which was scheduled this weekend. The concert was supposed to be organized by the Pearl S. Buck International (PSBI), a charity foundation that works for mixed-race children.

Korean-American singer Amerie held a press conference for her new album entitled “Because I Love It”.

Amerie Rogers, together with her mom Mi Suk Rogers (54) were in hanbok to face Korean journalists at the Seoul Joong-gu Millennium Seoul Hilton Hotel.

Her 3rd album “Because I Love It”, which was released in Korea on May 14 and planned to be released in the US in July, is creating hype because it includes her duet song “Take Control” (Asia title track) with Se7en.

Amerie highly praised Se7en. “Se7en is a very talented singer, dancer and performer. He is creative, wise and working with him was a fun experience”, she said.

When asked who she would like to work with aside from Se7en, she said she wants to work with Killers and Coldplay.

“I put a lot of effort and soul in this album. It has the 80’s New Wave, Gogo, R&B, Hip hop and other genres”, Amerie, who wrote and composed all the songs, said.

Amerie’s concerts on May 24 and 25 were cancelled but she will be staying in Korea for 3 days and 2 nights for album promotions.

A challenge is always beautiful. Top star Se7en is currently recording music in Washington with local producer Rich Harrison. Last autumn, Se7en joined hands with the said producer, who also produced Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love”, to prepare for his US debut.

Two days after his concert on April 7 at the Seoul Gymnastics Stadium, Se7en headed for the US. He met in Los Angeles Amerie to record their duet song “Take Control”.

Since there was no assurance that Se7en would be returning in Korea, an e-mail interview was made with him by Star News. Se7en, who was in the recording studio, did not mind the time difference between Korea and the US and went on with the exchange of emails.

“The reaction of Netizens is considerably hot”, said the reporter.

“Oh, really? I will do my best to finish this interview”, Se7en sent together with a laugh.

Since you came to the US, what have you been doing each day?
▶ The producer makes, records music… I’ve been doing a lot of music work. If I have time, I exercise and also rest.

You’re in the US to work on songs, how’s the progress? Are you confident that you can enter the Billboard?
▶ It’s a 50-50 thing. (? not sure) Entering the Billboard is important but I’m very happy that I’m able to do my dream. I’ll work very hard to be able to reap good results.

Have you been “working” with local foreign women? ^^
▶ Where I’m at now, there’s a small chance of meeting people. I’m busy with music work so there’s almost no opportunity for that.

You’ve meet local artists in America? What can you say about them?
▶ I recently met and worked with Amerie and it was really nice. She praised my music and style and that I’ll forever remember. When I formally debut, I would like to receive good reviews.

Rain will be holding a concert there in June, do you plan on going?
▶ I heard about this and if my schedule permits it, I want to go. I would like to give my support.

You debuted as an actor in “Palace S”. What did you feel after doing it?
▶It was a valuable life experience. To work as an actor was quite a new challenge and experience that is valuable and I learned so much from doing it.

What kind of role would you want to have in your next project? Do you already have a concrete plan?
▶ Since I’m in the US and will be doing activities in Japan, I have no concrete plans. But if in the future I’d be given a chance to work in a good project, I’d like to do it.

You regretted that your 4th album activities were short?
▶ It was short but I worked with more zest. I was able to give a good stage. I ended my activities with the “747 Concert” in April. What I regret is that I didn’t have many activities. Also, the fans were also sad. ^^

Living in a foreign country, what in Korea do you miss most?
▶ I miss Korean food the most. Isn’t it that most Koreans miss their mothers’ cooking? My mom’s cooking is the one I miss most.

On Parents’ day, you were not with them but what gift did you give them?
▶ I wasn’t able to give them a gift. But I called them this morning.

If you weren’t a singer, what would have you become?
▶ Since I’ve always dreamt to become a singer, I couldn’t think of what I would have become if I weren’t one. However, if I were in a different career, I would do my best in that field.

How do you see yourself at 30 years old?
▶ By 30, I’d be doing what I still haven’t done in this field. It seems that I’d still be a singer by that time to spread my music to the entire world. ^^

Aside from being a singer and an actor, what challenge would you like to take?
▶ There are various challenges in being a singer and actor. It is a challenge for me to show how I developed in those fields.
For your Korean fans, what would you like to tell them about your plans (album, acting)?

ooooooooo people i just saw the weirdest thing ever!!! someone mentioned about Amerie’s wikipedia page here before … that in there they wrote her first language is Korean … and now she is now only “conversational” in the Korean… but GOD after this video came out … i think they should better change what they wrote in there … not to be mean or anything .. i have all the respect in the world for this girl … but seriously that Korean piece we heard doesn’t seem to have to come from someone who is speaking it at home *rolling eyes* next thing we know .. we make her so pissed off … she makes a video just to prove the point .. but sweetie .. hmmm should have though about it before that comes out T___T

The tattoo does not directly translate to Amerie, but “Emeuri” (에므리) while the Korean media pronounces her name “Eimeori” (에이머리) however.
