Beauty is a pain, darlings. Imagine how you can strain your eyes if you have to open them so wide all day. But we don’t care, do we? as long as we can have the round and big and whatever-as-long-as-not-slanted-like-originally-we-have. We don’t even care if they don’t look like human’s eyes at all. Because one of the key words of being an Ulzzang is “BIG AND ROUND EYES”.

You got the eyes, then you better get the lips. and the pose. As reference, you can check Japanese mangas from the era of 80’s or 70’s (you know those manga characters with big-flickering eyes, waving hair, and melodramatic gestures?). now let’s practice.
1. Put your pinky finger on the corner of your lips. (you, of course, you may try other fingers, but thumbs don’t usually look cute on your face..not to mention middle fingers…)

2. Make your lips as small as it can be, like by saying “CHUUUUU” (these Ulzzhang pioneers hated Julia Roberts.)
3. Now take a close up picture, side angle. Better not to take it directly from the front, or people will see your wide nose. And just use your VGA phone camera, the blurrer the better. And give your face over-lighting.
4. Don’t forget to open your eyes super wide.
5. Just in case, if the heavy make-up blocks the oxygen to your brain, and you get a temporary brain disfunction hence not being able to understand these steps, just google for Ulzzang picture and imitate those pictures. They all look the same, so don’t worry, don’t waste your time, just pick any picture.

Make your skin fairer, add shades here and there, make the most use of “heal” button to heal your pimples and dark spots. and check if you have the super-latest photoshop edition with “Pray-To-God-Please-Make-It-Real” button. Smokey Makeup
This eye-make up helps making the eyelashes stronger that is more bold and more curvy.

1. Apply gold eye-shadow then draw with black pencil along the top lash of your eye.

About a month ago, there was a request for the kind of make up Korean celebrities use and here we finally made it!!

For the most part if Korean celebs can afford, they would prefer using the well known brands that we all know .. from Dior, MAC to chanel etc … but for the domestic product lines cuz of the limited Korean that we know (if you know Korean, please join our team!!!), we had a hard time compiling the information in the first place but here are some domestic cosmetic product lines that we got to know through some celebrities advertisements.

How can a woman doesn’t wear make up? …
So here is the very easy to read guide line on how to make it happen!
It’s the combination of what I do normally myself and what I learned around by translating some of the Korean beauty guides!

Foundation should be applied to the skin first, before any other make up product.
Though you may need concealer before that if you have skin blemishes, pimples and under eye dark circles etc … if you have any of those … that is the first thing to take care of ..

what concealer does is to provide an extra cover to specific areas of the face that you need special treatment to. It is said to use the finger tip technique .. you start with putting dots of the product on the area that needs coverage … we are talking about “under eye dark circles” here .. since it’s the most common usage of concealers.

This one they call “fourth finger method” since the under eye is very sensitive area you need to make sure to don’t use any force .. later on when you age and wrinkles find their way around this one will pay you back … start from side of the nose bridge and gently work it to the side. You may repeat the process for the second time too.

Now back to the Foundation.
Foundation comes in different form, here we cover the main ones:

Liquid Foundations

Liquid Foundations are most known for their best coverage .. they go all the way to the pores and keep it all together. That is why you need to apply moisturizer 5 to 10 minutes before beginning with this one. Moisturizer will block the foundation molecules to go all the way to the pores and it acts as a soft cushion to protect the inside of the pores ^^;

Make sure you get the right foundations for your skin type – choose an oil-based foundation for dry skin, water-based foundation for normal skin, and ‘oil-free’ foundation for for oily skin. It’s all labeled on the product. This is really important … cuz if you happen to have an oily skin and use “oil-based” liquid foundation you will end up having some nasty pimples all over the place!

How?
The recommended way to apply that is again the “fourth finger method”. You can also use the sponge (that is explained a little down the road) The reason they recommend finger tips is cuz it helps you use your fingers freely and apply the foundation evenly to create a smooth skin.

Use your fingertip and apply it all the way from foreheads, chins to both balls cups of your eyes. Oh! Always wash your hands cleanly before working with your hands!

If you use liquid foundation you should always brush Loose powder over it. The powder helps the foundations to last longer and also adds the finishing touches. Powder can be used on its own for the natural look, this is what I normally wear at school alone with creamy blush or illuminating cream on top of it, depending on the season ^^

There are some products out there combining both foundation and powder in one .. I don’t recommend those personally … since all they do is giving you a matte finish to the skin and it doesn’t do the outcome that a real step by step process gives.

Pressed Powder Foundations…

Pressed foundations give a smooth, matte finish to the skin that helps control shine. You can wear it in replace of the Liquid foundation if you want to go for an easy one .. or can be used on the liquid foundation. It can be applied with either a damp or dry sponge. Pressed foundations are known as the most quickest ones. You need to use the back of your hand for this one ..

How?
- With the sponge take a good chunk of the product and rub it well on the back of your hand, once the sponge is soft and ready you can start applying it on the skin.

-You need to go from in to the outer sides, try to start from the top of the cheekbone and with the short stroke elaborately paste it all the way out. For under the eye .. again make sure to not use any force .. just do repeated pads just like a soft knock touched. do not ever rub it in for under the eye areas.
-Then do the forehead, start from above the eyebrows and with the long strokes paste it to the outer sides.
-For the nose, start from bridge of the nose and from above work it to the lower parts.

Cream Foundation…

For these type you need a good tool to help you create light strokes to apply the the foundation product across the face. What they recommend is a wedge-shaped latex sponge or brush. You can tell how a cream will cover by how it feels to the touch. The thicker and heavier it feels, the more it covers. They use the thick ones for the stage performances and for under the camera light … avoid those if you are not an entertainer cuz on the light of the day they look artificial and draw attention to itself!

This one as you can tell is a little for professional use.
But we have so many SM trainees reading our blog ..
So hopefully this one will be a little help to them someday !

How to use the brush?

Use the end of the brush and take as much of a product to create a 1cm degree on the back of your hand. Then with the brush’s end form a ball and get the product warmed up and ready. Now with one-way only directions put the end of the brush on top of the cheek bone and with a long stroke come all the way to the outer side. You may repeat the process .. but do it one way only .. there is no back and forth .. it’s not a canvas you know! If you go back .. it’ll make the uneven pores of your skin stand up!

For the nose and forehead they recommend the T-zone technique. Go horizontal on the forehead .. one way again .. and go down on the nose starting on top of the bridge or even between the eyes!

It’ll take a practice to work with brush .. but anything is do-able!
Just don’t plan to attend an outside of the house meeting for the first time you are wearing this type *sisterly advise*

Apply a blush color of your choice on top of the foundation …
It’s always a good idea to use the creamy kind as a base
Mostly from the darker colors (depends so much on the season!)
and use powder blush the lighter-fresher color on top of the creamy one!
The way to put it highly depends on the shape of your face ..
and style of the make up you are aiming for !

 An Army of Beauty Queens?

Korea’s servicemen are changing. The rough skin, sun-burnt faces and stubble-length hair that once were the trademarks of typical army men have gone for the new generation. Some now rival women in the use of cosmetics, and some even order wigs to disguise their short hair for the vacation. And some buy dietary supplements in an attempt to create the perfect body.

Han (21) is stationed in Gangwon Province. He spends an average of W110,000 (US$1=W944) on bath products and cosmetics. Besides the basic shampoo and conditioner, he uses toner, moisturizer, essence, sun-block and foam cleanser. Recently he has been in need of more money as he is investing in specialized acne products. Last winter, he used hand and foot cream to prevent dryness. A soldier with two months remaining of his service typically gets about W80,000 (US$1=W944) a month. That isn’t nearly enough to meet his cosmetic needs, so soldiers dig into the allowance they get from their families. “I got worried that my skin would get rough and dark after I joined the army. If I want to meet my girlfriend during the vacation, I have to take care of my appearance,” says one soldier. “It’s not just me. Most people here use at least two or three specialized cosmetics for their skin.”

AmorePacific supplies its cosmetic products to over 1,100 Post Exchanges — the on-base shops for soldiers — across the nation. The company said sales from January through July surged 85 percent from the same period last year. Cosmetics company Missha, after seeing surprisingly high revenues from some 30 stores in the Air Force and Navy, has started to supply its products to over 2,100 PXs for ground forces this year. Missha’s marketing personnel said army sales are increasing by an average of 15 percent a month. The latest “it” item is a moisturizing face mask.

Also on the rise is the number of soldiers wearing wigs on vacation. Ji (22), who is stationed in Gwangju, bought a wig on the Internet that copied the hairstyle of movie star Lee Jun-gi ahead of his vacation. “In my compound alone, there are about three or four people who have wigs,” he says. More than a few take supplements in their quest for a perfect body. Muscle Club, a website specializing in muscle supplements, says soldiers make up about 20 percent of its overall sales.

Some inside the forces worry about these Generation Y soldiers obsessed with their appearance. Instead of getting used to group life and the special circumstances of being in the army, young soldiers these days seem to be self-obsessed and put too much emphasis on their appearance. But one field officer takes the longer view. “This trend is not just taking place among young soldiers, but among young men in general, so I shouldn’t be too worried about it,” he says. “When I was a battalion commander, I used to buy sun-block and give it to soldiers with sensitive skin before they went on a march. Afterwards, they were more active and eager in training.”

A plastic surgeon has published a composite image of the ideal male Korean face. Rhee Seung-chul, the head of plastic surgery at Hanil General Hospital, made the image from the faces of 16 Korean Wave stars. Rhee had earlier done the same thing for women by making a composite image of 19 female stars.The ideal Korean male consists of bits and pieces from Kang Dong-won, Kwon Sang-woo, Kim Rae-won, Mun Jeong-hyeok, Bae Yong-joon, Jung Ji-hoon, Song Il-gook, Won Bin, Lee Wan, Jang Dong-gun, Jae Hee, Cho In-sung, Jo Hyun-jae, Ji Seong, Ji Jin-hee, and Hyun Bin? all of them popular not only in Korea but in China and Japan as well.
