The Mnet Asian Music Awards.

After the sudden and somewhat shocking announcement that the MKMFs were coming to a close after their 10 year anniversary celebration last year, many people were left wondering what would take the place of the dodgy but youth representative end of year Award show. It had been full of plenty of controversies over the years, my favorite, Lee MinWoo throwing a tantrum and leaving JYP to stand on stage looking like a lonely freak show act (or more accurately have that performance cancelled, I prefer my turn of events albeit delusional). Many people thought that some companies could “buy” awards and that the “rules” were only followed for Mnets best interest.

Well that reputation ends and Mnet is trying to renew things with a new stupidly named award show. MAMA is what they’re marketing it as. When I was online a week ago on Naver search, I was wondering why on Earth people wanted to know what MAMA was. Only to leave myself thinking it must be a lot of people on remedial English class. But then when I bothered to check today, I found it as the replacement show.

I don’t know why Mnet would cancel MKMF (except for the controversy but every show has their share, perhaps it will give birth to Korea’s own Kanye West? A K-Blogger can only dream), but all eyes on this baby till it finally airs.

Last years ceremony was a mess and looked rushed, unorganised and sorta cheap so hopefully MAMA will be a better and more entertaining offering. Mnet if you need any help I have a whole list of improvements for you ready at a moments notice.

Anyhow Mnet has not really started things on a mature note, they’ve gotten peoples feathers ruffled with their JaeBom marketing strategies. LOL.

“We want him there!”  Is what they’re screaming.  Making fans think that perhaps JaeBom will be making his comeback on their stage.  And a comeback seems somewhat likely and unlikely according to JYPE.  But then again JYPE don’t really say much so JaeBom showing up anywhere is really possible but not possible at the same time (see what I did there?).

I don’t really care for their strategies to get people watching, but I am wondering on one thing.  Is Mnet sticking to their 9 month ban on SM Entertainment artists?  If that’s the case will they also opt for the “no show- no award” rule?  So even if you vote for an SM artist they wont win?  I imagine it would be a better show all round though, what with all the controversies surrounding SM artists now, as Martha would say  “it’s a good thing.”  That and everyone else will have a better evening and a shot at winning (since SM are up there with the buying trophies controversies).

I’m sure a lot of you have heard about the rumors about DBSK,  Asia conquerors and record holders of the World, and SM Entertainment, Slave drivers and Jackasses of the Entertainment biz. Well, we weren’t going to cover it initially cos well, it was blah to begin with and filled with he-said, she-said, they-lied schizz, but now things are becoming so clear.

SM Entertainment is run by a bunch of childish greedy whiny kiddies.

Shall I summarize and simplify what’s going on?

Since I neglected the site for the last few days for my own personal holiday (hey the beach frolicking pics made me jealous), that and now I’m free, I’m going to for funsies.

DBSK have always been the biggest money-makers for SM ever since Shinhwa left SM Entertainment. The DBSK boys have only been growing in popularity and eventually made records on a world scale with their humongous fanbase. They’re fun, happy, jolly and hella talented, so of course they would be loved. Not to mention, they’re also seriously hot.

SM have in the past had a great formula for success, it all started with Mr. Lee SooMan hunting down schoolgirls to ask them what kind of boyband they would like to see.. Yeah, it sounds wrong, but he insists it’s OK…I mean look at his marketing plan for SNSD! All for the good of his business! With the results of the surveys he created H.O.T and made them the great success they were. A few years later they broke up. That was followed by their negligence of Shinhwa and once successful, their suffocation of them which eventually made them leave and buy rights to their name after a lengthy and brutal legal battle.

So, after the bad past SM have had with H.O.T and Shinhwa, one would be smart enough to assume that SM would, like the smart adult businessmen they are, learn from their mistakes and make sure DBSK don’t end up the same way. But that’s not the case, they’re still the proud, stubborn, greedy business that refuses to let the artist get what they’re owed.

It seems that even DBSK have no idea how much they earn. Um… say what? Aren’t they meant to know, in accordance to any developed countries legal system? It should be clear on contract how much they get, ratio-wise and they should know their accounts.

Slave contracts as well were meant to be abolished a very long time ago! Artists should receive a fair amount of money from their work. After all, they do have a lot on their shoulders, and DBSK should have also paid off all the debts they incurred with SMEs training program.

Now, the hubbub comes from a lot of conflicting news, what with SMs sudden announcements about Yunho and Changmins acting arrangements.

If anything, it seems like provocation from SMs side, alienating those involved with the lawsuit. Thus, the rumors about the “disbandment”.

So yes, SM has been quite malicious, although obviously in the wrong.

SM has a lot of pull in the industry, many a time using their connections to force companies to allowing their artists to have exclusive appearances, MC gigs and shows. A lot of the time even getting banned from certain channels, last year MBC, this year KBS in the first few weeks of the year and now Mnet.

How did this hubbub start? Because of Hero JaeJoong, Micky YooChun and Xiah JunSu investing in a Chinese Cosmetics company with their own money. It’s not at all clear why SM have such an issue with their involvement in a separate company, since they have all had money invested in businesses in the past.

The only thing some people think is the issue that SM has with the Chinese company, which has now been claimed by the boys lawyer to be “blown out of proportion”, is that they may bank on the name DBSK without SM getting a slice of the action.

What with their already large cut of the pie, rumored to be from 75%-90% to the management company and then the remainder split to 5 people, it’s no wonder the boys are probably enraged.

It’s evident now that after 5 years and more of working their fine booties off for SM, and then getting their name slandered, through making their investment out to be some sort of betrayal, not only to SM but Changmin and Yunho, that they filed for a lawsuit yesterday (July 31st). The lawsuit asks for all their accounts to be sent in for review by the courts.

Which of course means that their contract will also have to be assessed.

Smart move boys. Yet what this does, is further alienate the other two, making them stuck in the middle. What was an issue about 3 of the boys with a cosmetics company has turned it in to a war between them and SM, with Yunho and Changmin as casualties lying in no-mans-land. After all, the other two were obviously played as pawns, what with the SM Entertainment backed drama for Changmin, and the 2 for 1 offer with Yunho and Go ARa.

It’s a smart thing to keep yourself waiting for a few days as opposed as every hour of the day plastered to the comp for updates on the matter. It won’t be resolved very quickly, if anything this is the best thing to happen to DBSK for a while, they will finally get what they deserve, hopefully. Same with Karma and SM Entertainment, this is throwing all their dirty laundry out for all to see, and it really is stinky.

Perhaps this will make things better for the rest of the acts under SME. The clearest thing seems to be now is the real name of SM Entertainment. The abbreviations aren’t really “Star Museum” as was previously claimed, it’s Slave Management.

All in all, what’s going to happen isn’t clear, what with SMTown Live coming soon…

Although a lot of people will be left disappointed, DBSKs appearance may fall through and perhaps even, the entire show may be cancelled since a lawsuit is officially under way.

Everything else in accordance to this issue is rumor and not fact, don’t worry too much Cassiopeias.

Looks like BOFs (Boys Over Flowers) quietest F4 member KimJoon has been getting some lovin’ lovin’. KimJoon is the latest to grace our cable TV on super popular show “MNet Scandal”. His fake GF has been getting a lot of attention from the netizens about how pretty she is, so…

Do you approve?

Cute. Girl is probably the prettiest one I’ve seen on MNet Scandal. I’d like this show so much more if the couples on it weren’t so freakin’ awkward and/or scripted, sometimes I just find myself getting bored even if the celebrity on is a personality. Nevertheless, I’m gonna try this one out. KimJoon’s quite the entertaining fella and sometimes the awkwardness is funny (Especially with idols LOL).

Mnet were never really known for their fantabulous ideas in terms of sitcoms. Actually, I’ll give you a cookie if you mention one that was any decent, or better yet, just mention one.

Apparently they’re acting wasn’t up to par, but by the looks of it, the concept was just too bizarre for words. Check out these caps, nicely tagged by Mnet to make us know that this isn’t really compromising paparazzi shots.

Thank God they changed the format, not because I’m pretty sure they can’t act and that a lot will just fade in to the background, but because the new way allows us to see how dangerous they can be behind the wheel.

What? What? You call a show “Wild Bunny” and you don’t expect someone to think of it as a knock off of PlayBoys’ Play Bunnies?

I ignored all the theories of what this show was going to be about for a while, and when I saw the promo pics I got even more excited to think that the 2PM boys weren’t gonna let me down and may in fact, do a little strip-tease and get lessons on this show.

You telling me this pic doesn’t scream, “which piece of meat do you prefer?”

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want no crazy man flesh exposure, just a slight peak of the goods is all nice.

And when I saw the “15 and over” rating I thought I was gonna get just that.

….

But then I remembered everything but kids shows are 15 and over

I’m pretty sure that a lot of people felt the same way and tuned in too, but mind you, a piece of the 2PM boys being themselves is not a bad bargain.

So, I call myself a fan of this show officially. And damn, apparently my fellow 20-29 year olds feel the same. The pilot show got an awesome 23% rating. And I don’t care about ratings but Newsen was kind enough to let me know. Nevertheless, this being a cable show it’s awesome it got such ratings, that’s 20% more than SNSD could ever dream of getting and their show was on Public Television! LOL! It was free access!

Here’s to hoping that Mnet gives me a call, approves my idea, and let’s me have in on it!

And by the by, I nearly forgot to mention that awful opening theme song.

Remind me, is it Melrose Place or Beverly Hills 90210’s? Or am I way off? Anyhow, the whole thing nearly put me off the show, it was so cheesy and awkward it hurt me a little inside. I’m also now convinced that the boys feel no shame.

Ahn JaeHwans depressing death

Not many people know Ahn JaeHwan internationally, except perhaps that he is married to Comedian/DJ Jung SunHee. Nevertheless, this man was as funny and sweet as his wife. He took part in many variety shows and was loved by plenty, when he married Jung SunHee he seemed like the happiest man on Earth. Behind it though laid a sad human being that took his own life in seclusion. Ahn JaeHwan was missing for a month before his body was found in his own van, and he had been dead for nearly 2 weeks (10-15 days). This of course, is devastating news and this year has been a sad year in Celeb-dom. Ahn JaeHwan rest in peace and our heartfelt condolences are sent to his wife, family and friends.

2PM in the evenings…

aaaahh… so that’s the secret to their energy…

2PM have finally debuted and they blew many a person away with their dance moves. When I watched their debut performance I couldn’t help but marvel at their dancing. I mean they were really well choreographed (what else do you expect from JYP), although the song is a little on the naughty side, I do like it. The dancing made it easier to stomach, it was more light-hearted. Their singing though, was as expected not that great since, a) it’s live and b) debut performances are hardly flawless. Looking forward to them getting used to the stage and blowing us all away with their more vocally-talented other halves…. 2AM.

Ya Shim Man Man making celebs dish since ever

Ya Shim Man Man is back, and oh has it been missed. Once again every episode seems to have celebs revealing a new secret or embarrassment. The first episode was aired on the 1st and Kim Heechul of Super Junior revealed a thing or two. Heechul revealed how after performances of “Don’t Don!” at the time of the Super Junior second album, he was told to scream his rock star scream at every performance. That very thing was the source of coughing blood after the performances. Can you say, damn? He also humorously added how he was asked if he was a “cyborg” at an airport because the metal detector kept on beeping, although he had no metal on him. The reason of course being that he has a metal rod in his leg, due to an accident a year or two ago. I can’t do his story telling justice, one must watch the show to truly enjoy it. Welcome back Ya Shim Man Man you were missed, and Kang Ho Dong is as cute as ever.

Another exciting comeback!

Oh yes, girls and boys alike can get excited with the comeback of Koreas favourite boyband, DongBangShinKi. The Dong Bang boys are on their way back to their motherland for their fourth album, it was announced last week. We can all expect their album released on the 24th of September. With their picture releases, one can tell that they are coming back with more of a raunchy manly image… bordering on strongly sexy. Girls may appreciate that the most… Music wise also goes along the lines of their image… Check out the teaser…

YounHa comeback performance

Like a bowl of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes in the morning…

As long as we’re on the subject of comebacks, we need to mention YounHa. Her refreshing vocals and “different” style of mainstream is nice to listen to, and of course she is adorable. She made her own comeback performance last week on Mnet, showing how lively she is on stage and how well she can do live. Looking forward to more performances, and of course listening to her entire album. The Tablo (Epik High) collab I am keen on, and title track “Someday” is a good listen too.

Big Bang new album to hit Japan this October

Yup, Big Bang are releasing a Japanese album this October, as well as their Korean I gather. Big Bang seem seriously busy what with everyone doing something different, as well as promoting their mini album. Haru Haru is doing extremely well, and a well done to them for that. We wish them a lot of luck in their Japanese efforts, they have done well so far.

Spectrums…

The underground in South Korea is so much richer than it may seem. Although Kpop is interesting unto itself, the underground music scene boasts amazing talent. After all, Epik High were once under the Underground title themselves and look at how creative, talented and artistic their music is. EZ Hyoung is one of those talented people that need to emerge completely from the underground and be welcomed in to the mainstream. His vocals are soothing and touching, the video is artistic and absorbing. Two years of writing, composing and producing, at least deserve a look-see dont’cha think…

Final Goodbyes

The biggest news of last week was of course, actor/Model/DJ Lee Eons passing. The news rocked a lot of netizens and fans as it was a sudden and sad death. Rest In Peace Lee Eon you shall be missed.

Photo Movie?

Actress Kim HaNeul and actor/model Daniel Henney have come together to star in a “Photo-Movie” called ‘Sweet September’. It’s a joint project by Elle and On Style and it seems like quite an interesting artistic idea, which of course was “borrowed” from the French like a lot of music we’re seeing nowadays too. I’m looking forward to see how they work this out and how good it may or may not be….

SHINee, um… Shines?

That’s the worst name to try and tag to be honest. Nevertheless these 5 young boys have stormed back in to the Music World and made quite an impression.

Promotional Ambassadors anyone?

First we need to know what a promotional Ambassador is, but SHINee deserve some kudos for landing this gig…. I guess. Group 8 continue to baffle us in terms of their ‘Hana Yori Dango” release, and instead of announcing the stars of the show they have provided us with some SHINee for our eyes. Not that we’re complaining, but it just doesn’t seriously make much sense. Why do you need a promotional ambassador for a Drama that hasn’t even announced stars or quite possibly started filming yet? Anyhow, SHINee will be releasing the single “In My Room” off their first mini album for the drama with accompanying MV. Group 8 stop playing games please, I am seriously starting to not care anymore…

Well, with SM it never really ever left. Anyhow, SHINees remake title track “Love Like Oxygen” is out and so is the full MV, and I cant get my head around the material for their pants. Is it not the worst thing to wear while you dance those moves? What is it anyway, is it pleather? Besides the strange fashion choice in this video we finally hear Taemins little voice. This boy blows me away with his dancing skills, his control over his skinny and tall frame is unbelievable for a boy his age.

Well quite possibly. Eric of Shinhwa keeps teasing his fans when it comes to releasing an album before he trots off to the army this October for 2 years. His company say that there is a 99% chance that he will, and so expect it soon.

This is the update for the past week, Monday 11th to Sunday 17th.

Festival rocks Jamsil to pieces

Two big Concerts took place in two Jamsil stadiums last week, ETPfest and SMTownLive ‘08. There were strange things to pick up in the media about one of them, but clearly they were both marked as successful. ETPfest opened up to a sold out audience opening its doors to over 40,000 spectators within the two days of the festival. The show was undoubtedly awesome and I think we can all be envious to those of which that attended. SMTownLive opened to Jamsil Olympic stadium with a less than enthusiastic response, but still went on to get a lot of positive remarks from the media due to the Big Name performers there.

Big Bang got busy

With Big Bang releasing their mini-album ‘Stand Up‘, it’s no surprise that they would be in the limelight a lot. With the Olympics still going on there is not much attention paid on the Celeb world or Music world since all eyes are on Beijing, yet Big Bang have found their own way to still pop up on the Media Radar.

First it was their crazy concert in Thailand:

Before they started their official promotions of their new mini-album the Big Bang boys held a concert in Thailand, causing many a fan girl to faint. 20 to be exact and it seems YG Entertainment was proud to mention it. “Our boys are studs and can knock you out with a look” is what they said in my head, after mentioning that.

The release of two MVs within a week.

It took a while to get here, “haru haru” of Big Bang that is, yet as soon as they released that MV with actress Park Min Young, we got another surprise with the release of “Oh My Friend” featuring the psychotically entertaining No Brain. I am all for promotion of underrated KRock Artists mainly because the underground K-Music scene is full of awesome talent, but seriously I couldn’t let ‘haru haru’ sink in and then got bombarded with “oh my friend”. Big Bang make it up though with being cute, and well seeing G-Dragon as a mental patient is always nice….

Thailand got lucky

Well to me, they did. Not only did they get Big Bang but soon after they left, Epik High came for promotions and a showcase for over 1000 fans. “We went there without much expectation, and it turned out we have a lot of fans here in Thailand. We were shocked when they sang along with us during our showcase performances. We have a tight schedule here, we are not feeling tired and is advancing smoothly.” Is what Tablo said on a phone interview about their trip. Any Thai fans out there willing to take me in next time they have Epik High around? Better yet any Thai fans that attended either event of Big Bang and Epik High?

SHINee need mouth to mouth resuscitation.

Noona’s, you wish. Well it’s a play on words to SHINees’ new single “You’re like Oxygen” that they teased us with the week before. The 5 young boys performed it at SMTownLive ‘08 (which was like a promotional tool for the upcoming SM plans to be honest), to a big happy response from fans. I am still waiting on the official MV, but in the forums you can get a listen. I hear only Michael Jackson with this song and as the official release is due tomorrow, wait for that. Although there is some controvercy surrounding the originality of this track, I am still giggling at their attempts to man-up these cute little boys.

It’s Wonder JIN?

Mnet is always the place to be for young music pop fans and their events are always fun to keep an eye on. You are bound to get some drama and interesting footage to keep you entertained till the next years version. And Mnet doesn’t want this years Mnet 20’s Choice (last years was the first), to go without some major attention. It’s not enough with their weird awards and choices but they have a strange collab stage going too. Jun Jin of Shinhwa and the Wonder Girls are going to share the stage for something, apparently spectacular. Well that’s what the PD is insisting on (I love how PDs get attention in SK don’t you?), and the PD also claims that after the performance it will by number 1 on search engines…. Ok, we will have our eyes on your project PDnim, but expect our laughter recorded and sent in a package to you if it ends up a joke….

Bae YongJoon forever young

In the heart and soul. The beloved Hallyu star had shoulder surgery recently after his well publicised shoulder ligament injury. After the two injuries Mr. Bae YongJun received after filming his last blockbuster he has been recuperating in the States and now will remain in the hospital for a week. South Korea’s prize smile should keep himself fitter and safer so he can swoon more Ajummas in to the Hallyu Wave…

East of Eden, right down the street

This has gotten tongues wagging for a while now with the uber awesome cast. The cast has a lot of big time names in it that leave your head reeling. Song Seung Hun, Yun Jung Hoon, Park Hae Jin, Lee Da Hae, Lee Yeon Hee, Han Ji Hye, Dennis Oh, Jo Min Ki, Lee Mi Sook, Kim Bum, Shin Eun Jung and many more are set to star in it. The teaser has finally been released and it will be interesting to tune in and see how this drama goes. The plot speaks of revenge, murder and ill-doings, definitely something to watch with a cup of tea and chocolates. Bring it on MBC.

Hallyu Hunk off the market

Gorgeous man that is Kwon SangWoo has officially spoken out via press conference that he is set to be married late this September. I think it’s time to start sobbing in to those hankies ajummas, and I say it fondly because I’m going to join you. Sexy SangWoo is set to marry Miss Korea second runner up Son TaeYoung. Apparently not many people are pleased. Not just with the fact that he’ll be off the market (not that many people had a realistic chance), but with whom he will be marrying. Netizens went nuts and started anti-ing up Ms. TaeYoung. SangWoo obviously hurt by their remarks spoke out to those people directly. “I, Kwon Sang Woo am not in love and getting married with a Miss Korea. I am really in love and getting married with a woman.” Now after the initial shock, I genuinely felt really happy for him. Ok, it was sudden, and it came with a very random person, but if that means happiness in the cold sad world of showbiz, I support it 100%. You with me ajummas? Afterall, this news wont change his position in our dreams.

KARA Comeback

Kara are coming back within days, the 24th if I’m gonna get specific. As a lot of people know they’re back with two members to the one they lost. The 5 member idol group format is known and most successful, so I was all nodding and interested at their upcoming debut until I saw their new members. Now, call me a cynic, because that’s what I am, but damn. One of their new members is like a child and the other is 17. What happened to the days where we used to look up at idol group members and wish were a little older so we could date them. Now that’s when I was 12-14. Now that I’m 21 and could date all the guys I used to have a crush on, but have since reconsidered since now theyre all weird, gay, married, insanely promiscuous and/or crazy. Anyhoo, back to the topic at hand, the girls are Gu Hara (1991) and Kang Jiyoung (1994).

Nam GyuRi leaves SeeYa

To be honest, Nam GyuRi kinda scares me, I mean I would never like to meet her in a dark alley or see her in the dark. Her smile and her “doll” image freaks me out a little. Nevertheless, shockingly to me she has gotten most of the attention out of the singing trio that is SeeYa. And her acting in their music video was mediocre, but people loved it nonetheless. I have no understanding of how they think, but it seems to have blown up her head a little (you’d think she’d be more humble after her ‘wardrobe malfunction’). Anyhow, she’s left SeeYa to pursue an acting career and a solo singing career. I don’t think her voice is ear-pleasing enough to go solo, but I will be looking forward to her new single. What will happen to the group now? Hmm… Mnet?

Is Elly still Sexy?!

Elly is Seo In Young if you didn’t know. Constantly a part of the gossip mills, Ms. Inyoung is going back to her solo singing for a wee while. Though she seems to have plenty of people hating on her (as we previously covered this week), she is funnily enough a seriously in-demand entertainer. Now I have a little confession to make, it doesn’t happen so often, but I would watch a show just because Seo In Young is in it. I wouldnt watch an ad though. She is entertaining and her joining ‘Ya Shim Man Man’ is proof enough of peoples interest in her. I hate her hair, hate it, hate it, hate it, with an unbelievable passion, her new mini-album is called “Elly is Cinderella”, so perhaps Fairy God Mother can give her a hairstyle worthy of Crown Prince J.

Lee Hyori

Like how I mentioned her right after the officially released teaser??

Little Miss Lee HyoRi, has made everyone crazy about the Hyorish. Her music is inferior in my opinion to Uhm JungHwas (yes I must mention them together), but goodness is she really leveling the playing fields. I didn’t like ‘U Go GRRL’ to begin with, or the other leaked songs as much as JungHwas mini-album, but after her comeback I’m getting second thoughts. With performance after performance I keep watching and that bloody “GRRL” keeps playing over and over in my head. That song is a grower and HyoRis awesome stage presence and performing abilities livens up the song so much more. I must admit I prefer her debut performance at Music Bank than the rest, but I still continue to tune in. Though I am a part of the “Dress women up and undress men” Kpop movement, I must concede this one and say, enjoy it guys. I also am, but not for the same reasons. I for one will be rooting for both the sexy divas, just because it’s refreshing seeing such great performances on stage. Viva la entertainment! I’m finally getting seriously entertained. How’s about you?

Lovable wrestler wants your money

Well, not yours or mine but talent agencies. And he bloody well deserves it. Mr. Kang Ho Dong and his crazy laugh have been entertaining people for ages. He’s come a heck of a long way from his wrestler days, he’s lost weight, got hitched and has scored successful shows on all major television networks. As well as of course winning awards, so now that his contract with Phantom Entertainment has ended, everyone wants a piece of him. Word has it he can ask for and get 2 Billion Won (a cool 2 million US). Wow, I wonder if he’s up for adopting any young adults….

Seo Taiji goes classical

Yes, with his comeback slowly reaching us, we get news that Mr. TaiJi is going to be going classical. On the 27th of September (a day before Kwon SangWoos wedding), “2008 Seo Tae-ji Symphony” will take place. How about that for experimentation? Well, ok classical music has always been used in various genres, but it’s exciting to see how Seo TaiJi is going to incorporate it to his music. He’s flying in classical conductor and composer Tolga Kashif, who once conducted the Royal Philharmonic and London Philharmonic orchestras, both critically acclaimed and admirable in the world of Classical Music. Come on guys, tell me you love him too?? Say it now before he’s officially back and everyone mindlessly joins the TaiJi troupe….
